STRABISMUS AND BINOCULAR VISION
Hello, my name is Lisa and I was born with
strabismus, a condition in which the visual axes of the eyes are not parallel and the eyes appear to be looking in different directions.

Now my sweet baby Lúa also has strabismus. We are patching her eye every day, she has glasses
-that she generally won’t wear but are so darn cute!!- and there is talk of surgery in the future.
I had surgery three times in my life. My eyes look straight and yet I do not have
binocular vision which is the ability of the eye to combine the images from each retina into one single image. I want Lúa to have what everyone else has that I don’t: depth perception.
OPTIONS?
There are other options for treatment besides surgery including ‘vision therapy’ which is not practiced widely in North America. We jump to the knife and want the quick fix here, don’t we! Cut it open make it look right to the rest of us... but it doesn’t necessarily solve the bigger problem.
THE EVENT
I am creating an event in Toronto called "The Eye of the Tigger"; An evening with a panel of doctors from all sides of the spectrum of treatment, for parents of children with strabismus to learn about what exactly it is, how it comes to be and what all the treatment options are.
WHEN:
Saturday, November 14
10am until 12pm
WHERE:
MaRS Discovery District
101 College Street, Toronto
